Many coaches make the mistake of having multiple formations with a bunch of different plays. To have a successful youth football offense you need a series based offense. Having a series based offense means all the plays look similar and work off each other.
Do not make the mistake of having 20 different plays out of a bunch of different formations. Youth football is all about misdirection. It is hard to develop a deceptive offense when you have a bunch of different plays. Having a series based offense will make all the plays look the same to the defense- this will make your offense very deceptive. If you have a series based scheme coaches will have problems scouting you. Even if the opposing team has film on your team the series based plays all look the same the first couple steps- so they won’t get much out of it. Having a series of plays will make the defense respect every area of the field. Make them look for the ball rather than reacting to an obvious hand off to the right or left. If you have a weaker team with every few good athletes, a series based scheme with misdirection is vital for neutralizing the opposing team’s physical advantage.
I run the Wing T Rocket/Jet series. What is great about this series is that every play sets another play up. We use motion to attack the edge of the defense. A lot of teams will start over playing the motion or sell out to stop our rocket sweep. The play calling will depend on how the defense is adjusting to our motion and formation. Our base plays in this series are: rocket/ jet sweep, power, toss, trap, counter, pitch, and slot corner( post/corner combo off rocket motion). All these plays look the same when the ball is snapped. We will pretty much run our wide rocket toss until they stop it. Once they get tired of it and over shift to stop it, we will hit them with our inside and counter game. Having a series based scheme will make the defense respect every aspect of offensive football. I have two formations that I run the same series out of.
