Tonight, Rutgers Football (8-1) Head Football Coach Kyle Flood held his weekly radio show at Brother Jimmy’s BBQ in New Brunswick, NJ. Youth Football Online attended and participated in the question/answers period by the coach. All we heard were topics referring to offense and defense, though nothing really about special teams..
I stood and asked Coach Flood if he could elaborate on the importance of special teams. Coach Flood said when you talk to coaches and players, they understand the importance of special teams. The media focuses on offense and defense. It’s about getting a combination of coaches and players who believe in the importance of excellent special teams play.
Here is the video:
Here is an amazing stat- Rutgers has blocked 32 kicks/punts since 2009, this by far leads the nation. At the Rutgers vs. Army this past weekend Rutgers blocked two field goals, which secured their team a victory. These two block kicks were huge momentum swings, true game changers for Rutgers. Having great special team plays a huge role with not only field position but with overall team momentum.
“We believe in every game, we have an opportunity to win the game on special teams..” – Coach Kyle Flood
