The 44 stack is a great defense that will bring confusion to any offensive blocking scheme. Stacking your linebackers will allow the defense to hide gap assignments. The 44 stack makes the offense’s pre-snap read difficult. The 44 defense is blitz and stun friendly. The 44 has 4 linebackers that can blitz at anytime. Slanting of the defensive linemen and looping of the linebackers works really well in this defense. This defense will give your linebackers a chance to pursue to the ball. Having 8 defenders in the box in youth football is a good thing. Youth football defense is all about stopping the run.
There are some negatives about the 44 defense. In youth football, natural linebackers are tough to come by. Trying to find 4 of them, plus backups can be wishful thinking. With the 4-4 you will need 4 solid defensive linemen. This defense only has 4 down linemen which will free up some offensive linemen to get onto the linebackers. All players have to play a required number of plays, in the 44 you really cannot hide any of your weaker players.
Remember, the key to defense is tackling.
