Spread Offense- Double Twins Swing Pass vs. Man to Man Coverage

This youth football play is out of the spread formation which features twin receivers to both sides of the field. This play features 5 down offensive linemen, 2 split-ends, 2 slot receivers, 1 half back off-set to the right and the QB in shotgun. The play is designed to get the off-set running back the ball out in space. This is usually thrown to best skilled

position player. This play will get your best athlete the ball out in the open field, making the defense tackle your best player in space. This youth football play is very explosive when executed properly, rep this play often in practice. Reminder, you need to have at least seven players on the line of scrimmage. Have one receiver to the left and to the right on the line of scrimmage. Make sure your receivers tell the side referee that they are on the ball.

The split-end to the right runs a post pattern right at the middle safety. The receiver in the slot to the right will run a drag route across the middle of the field, crossing the paths of the linebackers. The back side slot receiver will run a skinny post. The back side split-end will run a go route. This youth football passing play out of the spread offense is a man to man coverage beater. This play makes the defense tackle your running back in the open field, which is very difficult to do in youth football.

Spread Offense Shotgun Jet Sweep Play

This play is designed to attack the edge of the defense with the ball carrier coming in Jet motion. Having the ball carrier in jet motion will allow him to receive the hand-off running full speed. The spread offense is increasing in popularity.

This spread offensive formation features two slot receivers, two split ends (on the line of scrimmage), two tackles, two guards, one center, one QB, and an offset running back. The split ends will stalk block cornerbacks. The two slot receivers will stalk block any defender that lines up to cover them. If no defender slides out over the slot receiver the slot receiver will crack block the first defender to their inside. The left slot receiver will come in full speed jet motion and receive a hand-off from the QB in the shotgun formation. The off-set running back will lead block for the jet motion player. The offensive linemen will step play-side and look to cut off defenders running to the football.

Once the defense starts to over play the jet sweep, hit the defense with an inside hitting play off jet motion. If you have a mobile QB you can hit the defense with a QB power or QB Trap. If you have an athletic quarterback the shotgun spread offense is a great idea. It will make defenses have to prepare for the QB as a threat to run the ball as well. The spread offense can be used in youth football with much success.

Preseason Practice Report # 2

This past weekend we held our second preseason practice. The objective of this practice was to develop fluency with our base plays. Our base running plays are- rocket sweep, power, trap, counter, and gut. We were able to get a good amount of reps in the hour we had to practice. The kids are really starting to grasp this series. The motion timing was twenty times better than the last preseason practice. We were able to run these plays with both first and second teams.

The rocket sweep is starting to look real good. The QBs are executing great pitches and the running backs are doing really well with the motion timing, foot work, and catching the pitch. It is tremendously important that the rocket sweep is executed flawlessly. Every play in this rocket wing t series is coming off of rocket motion. We will rep rocket sweep and rocket motion timing over and over until the kids execute it perfectly.

My coaching staff and I spent some time working on our passing game. We worked on our post/corner and post/ wheel passing plays. Both QBs at practice threw the ball really well. They were able to read the defense and make the correct throw, I was pretty impressed. We also worked on our slant and fade routes. The slant was thrown well for the most part, but our deep throws could have been a bit more consistent.

All in all I am happy with the progress, but we still have a ways to go before our offense is clicking on all cylinders. We have one more preseason practice before the season starts.

Shotgun Flex-Bone Reverse

This is a reverse play that comes off jet motion. This play works best when the defense starts to over play the jet motion. This formation is the flex-bone, but in this case we put the QB in shotgun. You can run this play with your QB under center as well. Misdirection plays are the best plays for youth football.

This youth football play features two split-ends, two slot/wing backs, two tackles, two guards, center, QB, and an off set half back. The backside split-end (right) runs and blocks the middle safety. The play-side split-end (left) cracks down on the first defender inside, which will usually be the outside linebacker. The left slot back comes in jet motion and receives the hand-off from the QB. The slot back then carries the ball and hands it off to the right slot back. The right slot back takes a 180 degree step back, opens up and takes an outside hand off from the left slot back. Once the QB hands the ball off to the left slot back, the QB then runs and hook blocks the left defensive end or edge defender. The off set running back blocks the right defensive end.

The right guard pulls out and kicks out the first defender outside the QB’s hook block. The right offensive tackle down blocks. Finally, the left guard and tackle block down on the first defensive linemen inside of them. This is a great play to use in youth football. It will really take advantage of over aggressive and blitz happy defenses. Have a coach watch the opposing defensive ends, once they start over playing the motion hit them with this reverse play.

Youth Football I Formation- Power Iso

Power Iso-I Formation

The I formation is a part of youth football tradition. Whether it is your first year coaching or it’s been your 20^th year coaching, everyone knows the power I formation.

This play attacks the interior of the defense. This play is also known by many as I formation Power play. We run it primarly off-tackle. You can double team the defensive tackle to get a push on the line of scrimmage. You can also base block it (one on one). This formation has two tight-ends, half back, fullback, and a power-back. The power-back is lined up behind the tackle. You can do many different things with this power-back. First off, most of the time the defense doesn’t even realize it is an unbalanced formation (we have an extra blocker to the right side). It will also allow you to kick out the defensive end, or you can have the tight-end block the defensive end out and have the power back lead through the point of attack. The fullback will lead through the hole.

Coaching Tip- make sure your running back doesn’t belly towards the quarterback. We want the running back to explode and get the hand off at the point of attack- it is the quarterback’s job to get the ball to the running back at the point of attack.

This play is easy to implement and will provide a high success rate in youth football.

Wing T Offense- Rocket Sweep

The rocket sweep out of the Wing T Playbook is a great play for youth football. This sweep play only requires your offense to block 3 defenders to have success. The biggest block on this play is the seal block by the slot back. The defense will eventually adjust and the edge defender will start cheating or slanting to the outside to avoid the hook block. What you can do is have your split end cheat his split down and crack a wide 9 technique defensive end- the slot back will now lead block and take the cornerback that is covering the split-end. Having the split end line up wide will take the corner out of the game. The biggest block is on the edge defender and the outside linebacker (depending on the defense).

This play has the wing back come in motion at full speed (it is important that your motion back does not take a step or lean forward, it is a penalty) and take the pitch outside. The ball should be snapped when the QB doesn’t see the motion back in his vision (when the motion back is behind the QB). The rocket pitch must be a straight pitch to the running back. The ball should be a spiral and should not float in the air. The most important thing is to focus on getting a good pitch out of your QB. He must lead the running back while keeping the ball at jersey number level. The backside linemen must release and try to cut off the defensive pursuit to the ball.

Remember, this play will take REPS in practice. Once the QB gets the pitch and motion timing down the play will bring much success. It will also set up counter, power, and trap plays inside. This is one of the best youth football plays, it is extremely explosive.

Youth Football Plays- Punt Return

Youth Football Punt Return Right

Getting a score on a punt return can really swing the momentum in your team’s favor. Having a solid punt return will also help with the field position battle. Here is a play we actually scored two touchdowns on in this weekends game.

There are 6 defensive linemen and there are 2 linebackers, 2 corners, and 1 return player. The 6 defensive line must line up head up on each offensive player. Now there are two ways to do this. One, you can rush the 6 and go for a block. Two, you can have your defensive linemen not let the offensive linemen release, and block them down the field.

The 2 linebackers run back to the punt returner and lead block to the right. Make sure they are aware that a fake is possible. They do not run back to block until the ball is punted. The linebackers are looking to block from the outside in. The two corners will run back to the punt returner. If the punt team has gunners the corners must run with them and block them down the field.

The goal of this play is to have blockers create a wall, sealing the punt coverage inside. It is sort of like a kick return, you want to bring the wall to the ball. Since the ball is not always punted to the right or the middle, you should teach your return team to run this return to the left side as well.

Special Teams in Youth Football is often overlooked. My coaching staff and I spend a large amount of time on special teams in practice, and it pays off. Do not overlook special teams, getting a score and winning the field position battle on specials teams can really help your team achieve victory.

Here are some of our favorite youth football plays (on video).

The Double Wing Superpower is a play using a shovel pitch to the wingback. The double wing works all off pulling the backside linemen and getting double teams at the point of attack while kicking out the edge defender. Nine football kids blocking at the point of the attack gives a distinct advantage.

The Wing T formation, Unbalanced Left- Jet Sweep play is a favorite play. This youth football play takes advantage of having an unbalanced line. A key to this play is to have your Wing Back receive the ball in full stride. More from the video below:

The I-formation Power play starts with double teams at the point of attack. It’s considered an off-tackle play. The youth football running back reads which direction to power through. The fullback blocks first defender out of the hole. Wingback finds and blocks the linebacker. The running back follows off the blocks and is gone for the races. Successfully ran, this play will produce major yardage.

The Wildcat Offense in Youth Football

The best thing about the wildcat offense is the unbalanced line. There are defensive coaches that do not even notice that the offense is unbalanced (having more blockers to one side). This leaves the defense outflank and outnumbered, which is a recipe for defensive disaster. Even when defenses shift and adjust to the unbalanced line this offense will still work, that is the beauty. You have seen the wildcat offense become popular when the Arkansas Razorbacks ran it a few years ago. The Miami Dolphins are also known to run it. The Wildcat offense has made a bit of a comeback (also known as the single wing offense).

The sweep play is what makes this offense so explosive. Down blocking, kick-out and seal blocking on edge defenders is the best way to run this offense. This play does not always end up going outside, if there is room inside the running back should cut up inside. You can even run jet sweep to the motion back. The unbalanced line will allow for multiple blockers at the point of attack, which will also allow you to have double teams on really good defenders. This is a simple, yet effective offense. Youth Football- Crack Option

At the youth level you can run the option with much success. I once coached at an organization with the midget coach running option (Pop Warner ages 13-15). He ran both inside and outside veer option, as well as some mid-line. He scored a decent amount of points. It looked like I was watching a Navy or Georgia Tech college game. At the older ages of youth football, the option can be ran with much success. I personally would not run the veer on any age level lower than 13-14 years old.

The option that I ran was the basic load option. Unlike veer, where you make quarterbacks read defensive tackles and defensive ends, load option means we will block the defensive end. I will block the defensive end with either a split end cracking or have my wing back hook the defensive end. This all depends on the defensive look I am seeing. My full back will fill B gap, help secure B gap. I see a lot of A-B gap blitz by middle backers-they try to time my motion snap count. My play side wing back will hook the defensive end. If he cannot hook because the defensive end is in a hard 9 tech he will tug on his face mask, this will indicate he cannot hook the defense end. So our split end will crack him because he has better leverage. The back side linemen cross face- cut off pursuit. Play side down block.

The quarterback will take the snap and come down the line of scrimmage, no belling into the backfield. The left wing back will come in motion on first sound of the QB and be the pitch back. The pitch back must keep good pitch depth in relation to the QB. The read is the cornerback; he will be closer to the formation because I cheat my split end in a bit more than many other coaches. If the cornerback takes the QB, QB must pitch to the wing back. If the corner-back sits on pitch, QB must keep the ball and run up the field just outside the crack block. If the cornerback sits, QB must keep the ball. The backside tight end must get to the middle safety. If all players do their job, this play can go for 6 points. Load option is easy to teach and it is youth football friendly, at least from ages 13 and under.

Quick tip: If you are facing good defensive ends, (which in most cases the defensive ends will be good) you can have the full back double team the defensive end with the wing back or split end.
